Black Spots on Mango — Safe to Eat?

By MMA Farms··8 min read read

Finding black spots on your mango can be alarming, but most spots are completely harmless. Check out how to identify what you are looking at and whether the mango is safe to eat.

The 5 Types of Mango Spots

1. Lenticels (Natural Pores) — SAFE

  • Appearance: Tiny (1-2mm) raised dots scattered across the skin
  • Color: Dark brown to black
  • Safe to eat?: Yes, completely. These are natural breathing pores present on all mangoes. They become more visible on ripe, yellow-skinned varieties like Sindhri.
  • Action: Eat normally — these are not a defect

2. Sap Burn (Latex Staining) — SAFE

  • Appearance: Dark brown/black streaks or splotches, often near the stem end
  • Color: Dark brown to black, may look like burns
  • Safe to eat?: Yes. This happens when mango sap (latex) contacts the skin during picking. The sap contains urushiol-like compounds that oxidize and turn dark.
  • Action: The marks are only skin-deep. Peel and eat normally.

3. Anthracnose (Fungal Disease) — PARTIALLY SAFE

  • Appearance: Sunken, circular spots that spread and deepen. May have a target-like ring pattern.
  • Color: Dark brown to black, may turn soft/mushy
  • Safe to eat?: The unaffected part is safe. Cut away the spotted area plus 2cm margin. If more than 30% is affected, discard.
  • Action: Cut generously around the spot. If the flesh underneath is brown or mushy, that section is not edible.

4. Bruising (Physical Damage) — SAFE

  • Appearance: Irregular dark patches, often with slight softness
  • Color: Brown to dark brown
  • Safe to eat?: Yes — bruising is just cell damage from dropping or squeezing. The fruit oxidizes like a bruised apple.
  • Action: Cut away the bruised area if the texture is unpleasant, but it is safe.

5. Overripe Spots — MOSTLY SAFE

  • Appearance: Soft, darkening areas that spread as the mango overripens
  • Color: Very dark brown, increasingly soft
  • Safe to eat?: Yes, if it just smells sweet and fruity. No, if it smells fermented, sour, or alcoholic.
  • Action: Eat overripe sections that smell normal. Use for smoothies or milkshakes where the softness is a benefit.

Having grown mangoes for over two decades, we minimize spots by: (1) careful hand-harvesting with stem intact (prevents sap burn), (2) individual padding in boxes (prevents bruising), (3) proper cold chain (prevents anthracnose), and (4) quick delivery (prevents overripening). When you receive our mangoes, any spots you see are almost certainly harmless lenticels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are black spots on mango safe to eat?

It depends on the type. Lenticels (tiny natural dots) and sap burn marks are harmless — just eat around them. Anthracnose spots (sunken, spreading) may indicate the flesh underneath is also affected — cut that section away. If spots are only skin-deep, the fruit is safe.

What causes black spots on mango skin?

Five main causes: (1) Lenticels — natural pores, harmless; (2) Sap burn — mango sap at picking causes dark marks; (3) Anthracnose — fungal disease; (4) Bruising — physical damage during transport; (5) Overripe — natural darkening as fruit ages.

Can I eat a mango with brown spots inside?

Small brown spots inside may be from internal breakdown due to cold damage (storing below 8°C) or overripeness. If the flesh is soft and smells normal, the unaffected parts are safe to eat. If it smells fermented or the brown area is extensive, discard the fruit.

How do I prevent black spots on stored mangoes?

Handle gently (bruising causes spots), store at 12-13°C (not below 8°C to prevent chilling injury), keep dry (moisture promotes anthracnose), and consume within 5-7 days of ripening. Speaking from experience, we handle each mango individually to prevent damage spots.
