Three countries have officially declared the mango as their national fruit: India, Pakistan, and the Philippines. Here is why each country chose this fruit and what it means.
India
India is the world's largest mango producer (20+ million tonnes annually) and has the most mango varieties (1,500+). The mango has been cultivated in India for over 4,000 years, making it one of the oldest cultivated fruits. The mango is embedded in Hindu mythology (associated with Ganesh), Buddhist tradition, and Mughal court culture.
National variety: Alphonso (Hapus) is considered India's premium variety.
Pakistan
Pakistan is the world's 5th largest mango producer (1.4-1.8 million tonnes). The mango represents Pakistani agricultural pride, summer culture, and national identity. Mango season is the most anticipated time of year in Pakistan.
National varieties: Chaunsa and Sindhri are Pakistan's signature varieties.
Philippines
The Philippines is the 10th largest mango producer. The Carabao (Manila) mango holds the Guinness World Record for sweetest fruit. Mangoes are central to Filipino culture and cuisine.
National variety: Carabao (Philippine Mango, Manila Mango).
